It was also praised for its incredible storytelling and atmosphere, both of which would be influential to many games later on, such as BioShock, Dead Space and Singularity. It was revolutionary, being one of the first first-person experiences ever to creating true 3D environments, allowing players to look up and down, jump, lean, crouch, etc. System Shock was a critical success and considered far ahead of its time. ![]() It was followed up in 1999 by System Shock 2. ![]() I find the music takes me out of it because it doesn't really make sense if you're trying to feel like you're there.Īnyway, I'll stop rambling.System Shock was the first game in the System Shock series, developed by LookingGlass Technologies (later to be called Looking Glass Studios), produced by Origin Systems and released on September 23rd, 1994. I think it's a gamechanger for immersion as well. I think it really adds another layer of tension, and I might go so far as to call it a Space Odyssey type feel were the action not so frantic. Well I'm in Hydroponics right now and I won't spoil anything but I have to say I think my decision really paid off. I was enjoying it early on, but when I got to the science/medical deck I found I just couldn't stand the music. I thought I'd pick it up and see what all the fuss was about. So I'm on my first playthrough ever of System Shock 2.
